What golf actually demands

Riding a cart cuts that substantially: golfers who ride accrue around 6,300 steps, just under four miles[4].
So the fuelling challenge in golf is not "I'll run out of glycogen at the 14th." It's three quieter things stacked on top of each other: duration (four to five hours is a long time to hold performance), concentration (every shot is a fine-motor, decision-making task), and walking distance in the elements (often in full sun and heat). Fuel and fluid exist to protect those three, not to refill a depleted tank.
The real enemy — the late-round fade

The format barely matters — real food, bars, dried fruit, sports drinks, gels or chews are interchangeable ways to hit a modest hourly target, so pick what your stomach likes and what fits in a golf bag. But golf is also a fine-motor, low-arousal skill — a smooth putting stroke doesn't benefit from feeling wired. So the caution is real. Too much caffeine can bring jitteriness, a raised heart rate, anxiety and disrupted sleep, any of which could unsettle your touch on the greens or wreck your recovery before the next round. Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. 2016;48(1):132–138. — United States double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover in 12 male golfers over a 36-hole tournament. Caffeine improved total score (76.9 vs 79.4), greens in regulation (8.6 vs 6.9) and drive distance (239.9 vs 233.2), with more energy and less fatigue; the authors conclude a moderate dose of 1.9 ± 0.3 mg/kg taken before and during a round improves golf-specific measures of performance and reduces fatigue in skilled golfers.
